Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review

Ponniyin Selvan 2, directed by Mani Ratnam, is a film that evokes mixed reactions. While fans of the book might feel disappointed due to significant deviations from the original story, the acclaimed director acknowledges that the nature of the medium demands certain alterations.

The budgetary constraints are often cited as the reason behind the delay in Tamil cinema’s adaptation of the masterpiece, Ponniyin Selvan. While there is some truth to it, the verbose nature of the novel doesn’t translate well into the visual medium of cinema. It took some time for Tamil cinema to develop a director with Mani Ratnam’s sensibilities for both genres and ability to bridge the gap. In the first film, Mani Ratnam staunchly adhered to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s books, resulting in a fragmented narrative. While this pleased ardent fans of the books, it also raised questions as to why Mani didn’t take some liberties with Kalki’s historical ‘fiction’ that contained few evidence-based facts.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 can be seen as Mani’s way of introducing and establishing the epic tale. The first part featured lavish song sequences, while the second part takes bolder steps and deviates significantly from the books. Here, Mani Ratnam, the filmmaker, remains more loyal to his craft than to the written material. This approach elevates Ponniyin Selvan 2 as a superior cinematic experience compared to its predecessor.

In the age of green screens and visual effects, Ponniyin Selvan stands out as one of Tamil cinema’s greatest achievements due to its commitment to realism. The film begins with a captivating prologue, a flashback to Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) & Nandini (Aishwarya Rai’s) adolescence. This scene requires imagination, and Mani Ratnam has it in abundance. The director skillfully portrays the encounter between Nandini and Karikalan, making it believable and captivating. He transports the audience to the world of Chola Desam with his choice of exotic locations, successfully creating his vision of the setting. While it may not be historically accurate, artistic expression is not bound by strict adherence to truth.

After depicting Nandini’s story, the film resumes the narrative of Arulmozhi Varman. She is now critically unwell after being saved from the ocean by Oomai Rani. Vallavarayan Vandhiyadhevan (Karthi) and Poonguzhali (Aishwarya Lekshmi) decide to take him to a Buddhist monastery for treatment. Meanwhile, Nandini prepares to kill Sundara Cholar (Prakash Raj) and Aditha Karikalan on the same day with the Pandians. She lures Aditha Karikalan to Kadambur Fort under the pretense of negotiating with Madhurandhagan (Rahman), who is leading a rebellion to claim the throne of the Chola kingdom.

Learning about these plans, Vandhiyadhevan manages to pass on the message to his beloved Kundhavai (Trisha) in a breathtaking sequence. Tamil cinema seems to have forgotten how to portray powerful moments of love, but Mani Ratnam reminds us of the magic that can be created with a few close-up shots and concise dialogues. Supported by the music of AR Rahman, Vandhiyadhevan’s blindfolded predicament on a tiny island, with Kundhavai interrogating him, is a tantalizing moment that showcases the filmmaker’s prowess.

Unfortunately, this couple’s romance is not explored further, and it feels as fleeting as the song “Aga Naga.” However, the film delves deep into the passionate and toxic relationship between Nandini and Kariakalan. It is fierce, destructive, and exemplifies the essence of their characters. It might appear odd that the Ponniyin Selvan novels and films devote more emphasis to this love story than to the titular figure. However, it is justified because Aditha Karikalan’s guilt and inner turmoil drive the story. If he had heeded Nandini’s plea and spared Veerapandiayan, he would have been a sane ruler. He is the Pattathu Ilavarasan (Prince), after all. Without his complex love, there would be no drama and no Ponniyin Selvan.

Aditha Karikalan, despite being aware of Nandini’s deception, confronts her for a final showdown at Kadambur Fort. Vikram and Aishwarya brilliantly portray the intricacies of this unusual relationship, characterized by a dangerous mix of passion and vengeance. These two individuals have always brought out the worst in each other, yet they are unable to truly hate one another. This climactic scene can be considered the pinnacle of Ponniyin Selvan 2. Aishwarya’s intense screams, illuminated by lightning, perfectly capture the essence of the most formidable and enigmatic character in Ponniyin Selvan. ponniyin selvan 2 download

Indeed, the film has its shortcomings. It might be challenging for someone who hasn’t read the book to follow the complex storyline of Ponniyin Selvan. Due to the multitude of branching narratives, a conventional film structure becomes impractical. However, Mani Ratnam masterfully captures the essence of each character through concise scenes that are not even part of the book. One notable example is Ponniyin Selvan’s moral dilemma when faced with a plot to assassinate him in the Buddhist monastery. His unwavering righteousness and moral compass define his heroism, which Mani Ratnam portrays with restraint.

The film’s ending deviates significantly from the books, which will likely receive strong criticism from purists. Additionally, there may be complaints about the underrepresentation of beloved characters like Poongukuzahli and Vaanathi. However, this is the trade-off of translation and the price Mani Ratnam pays for his dedication to his craft. Perhaps in the future, another filmmaker will emerge from Tamil cinema to create a series that does greater justice to the sprawling novel. Until then, we have Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, a remarkable cinematic endeavor. ponniyin selvan 2 download
